چکیده

Glacier distribution and glacier changes were investigated in the Upper Brahmaputra River Basin using remote sensing and GIS in order to determine the influence of melting glaciers on the long-term runoff of the Brahmaputra River (EU-project BRAHMATINN). Current glacier distribution and glacier changes since the 1970/80s were mapped using multi-temporal optical remote sensing data from the Landsat series and the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). Repeat glacier outlines were then combined with the digital elevation model from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and analyzed within a GIS in order to assess spatio-temporal gradients in change in glacier area. Our findings yield total glacier area losses between -7 to -13% per decade in the Upper Brahmaputra River basin (UBRB) for the period from 1970/80 to 2000; c. 175 km w.e. glacier mass was lost, which equals c. 7 km w.e. glacier mass loss per year. This corresponds to a yearly average mass balance of more than -0.3 m w.e.

Decline of Geladandong Glacier Elevation in Yangtze River's Source Region: Detection by ICESat and Assessment by Hydroclimatic Data

Several studies have indicated that glaciers in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau are thinning, resulting in reduced water supplies to major rivers such as the Yangtze, Yellow, Lancang, Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra in China, and south Asia. Three rivers in the upstream of Yangtze River originate from glaciers around the Geladandong snow mountain group in central Tibet. Here we used elevation observations...

Optical Remote Sensing of Glacier Characteristics: A Review with Focus on the Himalaya

The increased availability of remote sensing platforms with appropriate spatial and temporal resolution, global coverage and low financial costs allows for fast, semi-automated, and cost-effective estimates of changes in glacier parameters over large areas. Remote sensing approaches allow for regular monitoring of the properties of alpine glaciers such as ice extent, terminus position, volume a...

Integrating Remote Sensing Information Into A Distributed Hydrological Model for Improving Water Budget Predictions in Large-scale Basins through Data Assimilation

This paper investigates whether remote sensing evapotranspiration estimates can be integrated by means of data assimilation into a distributed hydrological model for improving the predictions of spatial water distribution over a large river basin with an area of 317,800 km2. A series of available MODIS satellite images over the Haihe River basin in China are used for the year 2005. Evapotranspi...

Mapping of Snow Cover and Glaciers with High Resolution Remote Sensing Data for Improved Runoff Modelling

The study presents investigations of the runoff from snow and ice, carried out in the high alpine basin of the Rhône river at Sion (3371 km2, 491 -4634 m a.s.l.). Using satellite remote sensing data, features like the snow coverage in the whole basin, the gradually decreasing snow coverage on glaciers and the area of exposed ice have been mapped. The periodical monitoring of the basin is based ...

A River Basin over the Course of Time: Multi-Temporal Analyses of Land Surface Dynamics in the Yellow River Basin (China) Based on Medium Resolution Remote Sensing Data

The Yellow River Basin is one of China’s most densely-populated, fastest growing and most dynamic regions, with abundant natural resources and intense agricultural production. Major land policies have recently resulted in remarkable landscape modifications throughout the basin. The availability of precise regional land cover change information is crucial to better understand the prevailing dyna...
